Steve was one of my best frieds at Paly.  We had a group of about 10 who had several classes together and we got together on weekends.  Steve lived at Stanford and his father was a faculty member, journalism I think.  In the early '90's Steve called me by surprise, and we spent a day at Marine World Park in Vallejo with my 12 year old daughter.  After Steve went home, Stephanie said, "Dad, your friend is really nice."  I realized that Steve had treated her with respect, as an equal.  He had asked her opinions about a few things.  And he was sincere, he wasn't faking.  Kids know when they are being treated respectfully.

Sadly, we didn't follow up onn our good day together.  When we were 59 in 2004 Steve;s brother Craig called me and said that Ssteve had a brain tumor or cancer and was going to die.  I visited him once and attended the memorial.  As Stephanie noted, he stoood out among my friendss as especially warm-hearted and decent.

Yes, I remember Stephen as a very good and decent fellow. He was quite the wrestler, too, and very quick.
